FAMILY STORY LAZY SUSAN

October 10, 2016

When creating a personal story object think about it as snapshots of either places, or things your family has done.  Here I've included our love of the Beach, our Boat, and South Florida. I've surrounded it with inspirational sayings, and if you have terrible handwriting, as I do, well that's where your Cricut or other cutting machine comes in handy! Scroll down to see how to make this!

SELECT YOUR SUBJECT MATTER & MAKE A LIGHT SKETCH

Pick out subjects and sayings that have meaning to you and your family.

Ideas for selecting subject matter can include many things such as special vacations, hobbies, sports, cooking special meals or favorites. Draw a light sketch, you can do one picture or divide it into many smaller ones. You may want to use a wood burning kit to burnish the wood on some of the design, in mine I used it to distinguish the divider lines.

DECIDE ON COLORS!

Think about your home decor themes, select colors that will work well in your space.  I chose the Carribean palette to brighten up my space.

There are many great color themes to pick from, if you are unsure or would like some great ideas try searching the web, sites like  Design-seeds.com have beautiful color palettes sure to inspire! You can also visit other sites like Colormind where you can upload an image that you like the color mix and they will tell you which colors make up that palette. Take a look at the palette created from this artwork with just one click "Love and Symbols".

USING SOFTWARE OR A CRICUT TO CREATE YOUR SAYINGS MAKES IT EASY TO HAVE PROFESSIONAL LOOKING WORDS!

How To Curve Text in Cricut Design Space

I have owned Cricut machines for over a decade and I absolutely love their ease of use and versatility, they are however quite expensive ranging from $200-$400 USD. I'll post another blog on the many things you can do with them in the future. Another option is to use a design software, print out the words and trace them using by rubbing a pencil on the back side, or using Carbon paper, then use a sharp pen to transfer the design, finalize it with permanent marker on the wood.  Wiki How has a nice blog on how to Trace.

FINISHING YOUR MASTERPIECE

Once you're happy with your artwork it's always a good idea to protect it with a sealer. I like using Polycrylic, water-based sealers and will put 3 to 4 coats. It comes in both Gloss and Satin finishes too. This can be found at your local hardware store, on Amazon and many other places. You can also put clear glass on top, which will protect it from hot pans or dishes where you serve dinner. I was able to find mine on Amazon and many cities will have small businesses that will cut glass too.
