Welcome to the fascinating world of organic soap making, where creativity meets a commitment to sustainability! If you enjoy crafting, love eco-friendly projects, or are simply curious about natural skincare, you are in for a delightful experience. This beginner’s guide to organic soap making will provide you with all the essentials to kickstart your soap-making journey.
Creating organic soap blends artistry with practicality. You not only get to make beautiful, customized soaps, but you also have full control over what goes into them. This means crafting soaps that are gentle on your skin and safe for the environment. Let’s dive into the process!
Why Choose Organic Soap Making?
The charm of organic soap making lies in its health-conscious and eco-friendly approach. Many store-bought soaps contain synthetic ingredients that can irritate skin, harm the environment and are just not good for you. By crafting your own organic soap at home, you embrace natural ingredients that are better for your skin and for the planet, you get to be incontrol, no more Parabens, only natural preservatives.
For example, many commercial soaps use sulfates, which can strip away natural oils from your skin. In contrast, when you make your soap using a base of natural oils like olive or coconut oil, your skin can feel nourished and hydrated. Plus, the creative possibilities are endless! You can experiment with colors, scents, and shapes, making each bar a unique creation that reflects your individuality—perfect as gifts for friends and family. I make my own organic soaps because I want to void the harsh chemicals, and have sold hunderds on Etsy when I was an active seller too. I want to share my top selling soaps with everyone so they can make them at home for themselves and to give as gifts. See below for a brief introduction, and if you want all of the projects you can find my ebook on Kindle/Amazon here: Organic Soap Making Guide
Getting Started: Materials You’ll Need
To embark on your organic soap-making adventure, gather some essential materials. Here’s a list to help you prepare; I have listed the materials I use on an Amazon Shopping list to make it easier to locate some options if you can't find them locally.
Soap Base: For beginners, a melt-and-pour soap base is the easiest choice. Look for organic bases that contain nourishing oils and butters, such as shea butter or coconut oil. I do go into more detail in the book around the benefits of each base.
Molds: Silicone molds are ideal for beginners. They allow for easy release of the soap bars and come in various shapes, from simple rectangles to fun designs.
Essential Oils: These not only provide wonderful aromas but can also offer therapeutic benefits. For instance, lavender oil is known for its calming properties.
Natural Colorants: Enhance the visual appeal of your soaps using colorants like turmeric for yellow, spirulina for green, or beetroot powder for pink.
Additives: You can elevate your soap by adding elements like dried herbs (e.g., chamomile), oats for gentle exfoliation, or honey for its moisturizing properties.
As you gather these materials, you're setting the stage for a fun and creative soap-making experience!

Each project in the book will increase your skills and are labelled beginner to advanced. Links to materials are provided and I always recommend you shop for deals, discounts and sales! These were a teen party activity hit, done at the start of the party, they got to learn how to make them, color and scent them, mold and then I just put them on trays in the refrigerator so that by the end of the party they could be unmolded, wrapped in cellophane (saranwrap) and pretty party bags to take home as party favors. Far less expensive than buying individual pretty soaps, and far more fun! Instead of snowflakes opt for flower molds, or other molds that fit your party theme!
